How Did Align Therapy Start?
The transition from a regular Physical Therapy Clinic to one that proactively addresses the real problem!
David Butler began as most Physical Therapists in an outpatient orthopedic setting, treating a variety of problems, and trying to maintain a full schedule. It was in this setting that it became clear that the "normal" way of treating pain and dysfunction was not adequate.
After becoming Board Certified in Orthopedics, and becoming more specialized in the spine, David decided that to treat spine problems, and more specifically Scoliosis, he would need to break off and start something completely different.
A year after this realization, Align Therapy was born! It started with only a couple of patients, and now has blossomed to something where people from all over Utah and even into the surrounding states come to receive specialized quality treatment.
Here are 3 examples of what makes us different!
- Scoliosis Specific Exercise
Scoliosis is something that affects around 3% of the population, and yet most of those are just told to just "wait and see" if it gets worse.
This recommendation comes despite current evidence showing improved outcomes when Scoliosis Specific Exercise is used. This is the case in Adolescents looking to stop progression, or adults looking to reduce pain and dysfunction
Seeing the need for Proactive Scoliosis Treatment, David decided to get certified in the Schroth Method, which was the most researched and validated approach to scoliosis at the time. He has since been certified in the SEAS Approach as well as his second level certification in Schroth.
Our treatment for scoliosis is specific to each individual curve, and is one-on-one with the therapist! We have seen great results in decreasing progression of the curve, decreasing pain, and empowering those living with Scoliosis to live life to the fullest.
David's commitment is to provide the BEST available treatment for Scoliosis and Spine Deformity and to reduce how many need surgical intervention.
- Runner Specific Treatment
Running has become a huge activity and sport among people of all ages. It is a great way to exercise and has many health benefits. Unfortunately, many runners also experience aches and pains associated with running.
As a runner and triathlete himself, David understands the aches and pains that come with running, along with the mentality. Many runners, David included, use running as a stress release, and taking away running is not an option.
In 2013, David began using video analysis to analyze running form and make changes to reduce strain on the body. Over the course of many continuing education classes and experimenting with different treatment techniques, we have developed a solid Running Rehab program.
Now, with sponsoring the Salt Lake Triathlon club, as well as multiple high school cross country teams, we have become a leader in the effective treatment of runners!
- Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist
All through Physical Therapy school, and into internships, David wanted to be an orthopedic specialist in an outpatient setting. This allowed him to interact with a variety of people, and see many different types of injuries and conditions.
This passion for orthopedics lead him to become Board Certified in Orthopedics in 2011. Specialization in orthopedics also lead to more of an emphasis on spine related problems...eventually resulting in a Scoliosis and Spinal Deformity Specialization.
At Align Therapy, we continue to have a large focus on Orthopedic injuries. Everything from total joint replacements to chronic Low Back Pain is seen regularly in the practice.

With being a specialized clinic comes the need for highly trained and skilled therapists. Only those with training and skills to match our core values are able to work at Align Therapy. We have some of the best Therapists around, and they help our patients every day meet their goals.
